9:00 AM | Planned Giving 201: Beyond Basic Theory Towards Basic Application | Presenter: Greg Abeyounis, CFRE, CGPA, MA

The goal of this presentation is to attempt to take the bullet points of understanding basic planned gift principles and provide a framework to take those theories and move them into achievable action items.  From the basics of documenting Wills/Living Trusts, Beneficiary Designations (IRA/401K/Qualified Retirement Plans/Annuities/Life Insurance/TOD accounts) through the utilization of CGA variations, CRT variations and Retained Life Estates we aim to show how significant these gifts are for all non profit organizations.  These various gift types make up a significant part of most fiscal year annual fundraising totals and comprehensive capital campaign totals.  Your donors can realize multiple new ways they can support their favorite charitable organizations often times with blended gifts (current gift/charitable gift plan).

10:30 AM | KEYNOTE: Gift Planning GPS and Standard Performance Metrics for Charitable Gift Planners | Presenter: Joseph O. Bull, J.D.

What is the difference between a good gift planning program and a great one?  In the fall of 2020, CGP will publish National Standards for Gift Planning Success. The standards describe best-case scenarios for all aspects of a program, including management support, human capacity-building and donor-focused operations.  In this presentation, the Chair of CGP's Metrics and Standards Task Force brings an update on the development of the GPS Standards and how they incorporate the challenging process of measuring the performance of gift planners and planned giving programs. We know that many gift planners struggle to have a "seat at the table" in their organizations.  Many gift planners also consider their metrics to be counterproductive, incentivizing the wrong behavior and imposing a short-term view on a long-term process. The CGP GPS Standards will provide large and small organizations a road map for program success and a realistic way to generate information that helps managers understand the importance of gift planners' work.

12:00 PM | Charitable Gifting for Our Donors and Clients | Presenter: Neil Brown, CPA, CFP

This one hour session will focus on an overview of the planning process and target person as well as the tax benefits or various ways to gift efficiently. We will discuss IRAs and QCDs, appreciated securities as well as other strategies. We will also touch on the new SECURE Act and how that may affect gifting between 70 ½ and the new age 72.

1:30 PM | Blended Gifts and How to Create Them | Presenter: Joseph O. Bull, J.D.

Blended gifts are a mixture of well-known gift planning instruments: charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, charitable gift annuities, pooled income funds, retained life estates, tax-advantaged outright gifts of highly appreciated capital assets, etc.  This session will explore how to combine and integrate these instruments as well as exploring seldom-used specifics in the Internal Revenue Code that allow a single CRT to be a blended gift unto itself.

3:00 PM | Stories from the Field | Presenter: Jim Hackney

We all learn from those who walked the path before us and from those who walked the path beside us, and even those following us!  In this session, you will hear from a seasoned development professional who has some stories to tell on lessons learned in his career.  He will share wisdom gained the hard way from his years of working with donors to develop major and planned gifts.

4:30 PM | Virtual Happy Hour on Bill's Porch

9:00 AM | Always Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth | Presenter: Kent Weimer, CAP

Not all gifts are beneficial. To protect your organization, you need to fully understand what you're getting when offered a gift that doesn't come completely strings-free. Before accepting gifts with restrictions, or gifts that require further action from the organization, make sure that you're willing--and able--to do what it takes to maximize the gift. In this session, we'll walk through some of the warning signals to watch for when offered gifts with restrictions or non-traditional gifts. We'll share experiences that have been ripped from the headlines and discuss how to best handle difficult conversations. Attendees will leave with a better of understanding of what red flags to watch for--and why--and will be armed with tips on how to communicate with donors when you can't say yes. This is ideally a joint session done with Rebecca Watkins of the North Carolina Symphony. This presentation has been well received at the CGP National Conference and the AFP International Conference.

10:30 AM | Getting to YES... a Win/WIn/Win for Donors, Charities and Trusted Advisors | Presenter: Phyllis Silverstein, CFP, CAP

The presentation will center around the distrust the Charitable Gift Planner has for the Professional Advisor and visa versa.  My hope is that we can help "both sides"  realize how to put their donor/client first, stewarding the donor/client to realize their philanthropic goals while becoming friends and partners along the way.

12:00 PM | Lifetime and Beyond: Gifts or Retirement Plan Assets | Presenter: Tim Prosser, J.D.

Retirement assets - in IRA, 401k, and other tax-deferred accounts make up a significant portion of donors' net worth.  While intended primarily to provide retirement income to account holders, these accounts  can also be used to fund valuable charitable gifts, including life-income gifts.  In this session we will use donor case studies to discuss the options available for lifetime and testamentary gifts of retirement plan assets, including outright and split-interest gifts.  We will discuss the tax and non-tax implications of these giving arrangements and the increased importance of testamentary charitable remainder trusts as a result of the SECURE Act.

1:30 | Your Culture/Ethos of Philanthropy | Presenter: June Bradham, CFRE
